How does a transformer achieve voltage transformation?
Dec 13,2024
A transformer is an electrical device used to change AC voltage. Its working principle is based on the law of electromagnetic induction, and voltage transformation is achieved by transferring current between two mutually insulated coils. Generally speaking, a transformer consists of an iron core and two coils, one of which is called the primary coil and the other is called the secondary coil.
When the transformer is working, an AC current is first input through the primary coil, which will generate a changing magnetic field in the primary coil. Since the primary coil and the secondary coil are both wound on the same iron core, the magnetic field will be transmitted to the secondary coil. According to the law of electromagnetic induction, when the magnetic field passes through the secondary coil, an induced electromotive force will be generated in the secondary coil, thereby generating current in the secondary coil.
Since the number of turns of the primary coil and the secondary coil is different, according to the transformer transformation ratio formula, that is, the number of primary turns divided by the number of secondary turns is equal to the primary voltage divided by the secondary voltage, different voltage conversion can be achieved. For example, if the number of turns of the primary coil is 100 and the number of turns of the secondary coil is 50, then the input voltage of 100V can be converted to the output voltage of 50V.
In addition, the efficiency of the transformer is also very high, because there is almost no loss inside the transformer, and it can effectively transfer electrical energy. When the transformer is working, the iron core inside the transformer will minimize the magnetic flux loss, and the insulation between the coils can also reduce the leakage current loss, thereby improving the efficiency of the transformer.
In general, through the law of electromagnetic induction and the structural design of the transformer, the transformer can achieve effective conversion from input voltage to output voltage, and is an indispensable and important equipment in the power system.
